The Double-wound strings give you the bulk and mass needed to drive the top on an acoustic guitar but at much lower tension. By using a much smaller plain steel string for the core, then wrapping-winding the string twice in a much finer winding we get a string that is far more flexible. The lower tension is much easier on the guitar structurally. Plus the thinner gauge of the winding significantly reduces the finger noice on the strings as the outside winding is much smoother than a conventional bass string. This .011- .050 gauge is particularly well suited to a pre-war era guitar that is fragile yet potentially full sounding. These low tension strings will give a much fuller bass than typical .011- .050 gauge strings and at much lower overall tension.
