There's No Business Like Show Business is a celebration of the curtain calls and pratfalls of Ed's life in professional theatre. With his irrepressible sense of humour, he recounts the stories that have stayed with him through his thirty-five years in the business. He reveals, for instance, that Rex Harrison once gave his dressing-room refrigerator to his driver as a tip, and that Yul Brynner demanded that all the halls and dressing rooms of the Alex be painted dark brown. He fondly describes his meeting with Diana, Princess of Wales, and relates how his landmark theatre became her namesake. He remembers that Peter O'Toole always thought of himself as a "jobbing" actor, and that Lauren Bacall insisted her dressing room be outfitted with baby-blue broadloom -- for the enjoyment of her three pet poodles.

Many great luminaries of the stage populate these pages. From Joan Plowright and Jonathan Miller to Red Buttons and Lily Tomlin, Ed met and remembers them all.
Yet through it all -- the applause and the excitement, the hundreds of awards and honorary degrees, the Order of Canada and the Commander of the British Empire -- Ed has remained a simple shopkeeper at heart. When people ask him what his CBE stands for he says, "Creator of Bargains" Everywhere! Which is why he would never ditch his day job.
