About the painting.
Created as an homage to Andy Warhol's famous statement that. . .
"In the future . . .every one will be famous for 15 minutes"
The subject Madonna is treated as an effigy or icon an object of fame to be desired and worshiped. At first glance one recognizes the distinct features of the famous pop icon, The heavy eyebrows and half-lidded gaze and parted scarlet lips.
Her head is surrounded by a golden halo reminiscent of the images halo's found in byzantine and medieval artworks devoted to saints, Jesus and the Virgin Mary.
If one looks closer, inside the halo are repeated images of the symbol of the $ sign. As one stands further back and looks carefully, snaking through the gold border is a larger $ silver dollar sign painted on top of the gold. The implication being that fame, celebrity and capitalism, are all integrated in modern culture.
With closer inspection one notices that her eyes are black and empty very much like the old roman and Greek bronze sculptures found in antiquity. Visible on the hand is a small flower, treated like a tattoo commonly found on people who have spent "time in prison."
The implications of this painting are that the concept of " fame" and "Fame Worship" is very like becoming a prisoner to ones image. Madonna is painted in a ghostly corpse-like white hue. She is locked firmly into the firmament her celebrity as an iconic figure, available to the masses to objectify and venerate, yet removed and dehumanized for the consumption of public Can be picked up in the GTA or shipped at buyers expense.
